A practical checklist for moving your number with less disruption. Use the same assumptions for every offer and verify the latest terms directly.
Tell the new provider you want to keep it
ComReg confirms that consumers can keep their mobile number when switching. Tell the new provider explicitly that you want to transfer it. Check the new provider’s process and the details it needs before arranging the move.
Get your account details ready
Have your current phone number and account number available, and make sure the account details are correct. Incorrect information can delay a transfer. Keep access to your existing SIM so you can receive any verification messages required by the provider.
Check your old contract
Moving the number and settling the old account are related but separate tasks. Check your minimum term, cancellation conditions and any remaining handset balance. Ask how the final bill will be handled and retain confirmation of the transfer.
Choose a sensible time
Avoid scheduling a change immediately before an essential call or travel. Ask the provider about the expected timing and what interruption to expect. Back up anything stored on the old SIM and make sure the new SIM or eSIM is ready.
Verify the result
Once the transfer is complete, test incoming and outgoing calls, texts and mobile data. Check services that send security codes to your number. If something does not work, contact the new provider with the transfer details rather than placing a second transfer request.
